The 112 physical addresses allotted by standard mode I²C may be sufficient for most systems. However, a common issue is when system designers are forced to use slave devices that provide only a few unique addresses. This can make it necessary for them to reuse the same address. In these cases, Analog Devices' I²C multiplexers can be used to permit the reuse of I²C physical addresses. Shown here is the LTC4314 1:4 pin-selectable mux, where four I²C devices are all assigned the same address. Individual enable pins allow users to choose which downstream bus the upstream bus will be connected to. These muxes also integrate bus buffers, so the user will receive all of the unique features that the Analog Devices bus buffers bring, such as high noise margin, rise time acceleration, and stuck bus protection.
