Digital Power is simply having digital control over what would otherwise be an analog-only power system when designed traditionally. In other words, Digital Power is using software to truly configure and communicate with point-of-load power supplies over an I²C or SMBus digital interface. Digital Power devices that support PMBus commands provide instructions specifically designed to work with power supplies, extending the rapid and simple nature of I²C to power devices. Key power supply parameters like output voltage, load current or load temperature can all be measured and monitored to make any necessary system adjustments on-the-fly or interrogate data stored in EEPROM at a later time. Ultimately, digital power is an architectural choice that provides a more accessible power subsystem.
