The top of the figure shows an example of how to use the PRF series with a voltage regulator. The control IC uses an internal comparator and external thermistor to protect the regulator from overheating. The output voltage from the thermistor circuit is used by the IC’s internal comparator to identify an overheat condition. This kind of function can also be achieved when using just FETs or other transistors, per the bottom half of the figure.
