Ferrites are a special kind of ceramic material which is formulated to have magnetic properties, rather than the more familiar “dielectric” properties commonly used in ceramic capacitors. Oxides of iron, cobalt, nickel and manganese are among the raw materials used to create “ferrite” formulations for use in EMI suppression products, conveniently supplied in SMD format in the great majority of cases. New market and application requirements have driven the development of increasingly versatile magnetic ceramic formulations, as well as internal electrode geometry, to support the use of ferrite beads in a growing variety of EMI suppression and compliance challenges.
