As the voltage on the output side of the inductor fluctuates due to load changes, power surges or EMI issues, the inductor sources current as the voltage tries to drop to maintain it at an acceptable level. The inductor should not be in the saturation mode in order to suppress any increase in the input side. It also ensures that if power is lost, the devices turn off in a safe manner.
