Taking the ADM1171, low voltage positive hot swap controller as an example, the measured sense voltage is normally gained up by 20 using an internal current sense amplifier. This is then compared against a 1V reference providing a 50mV sense voltage limit (1V / 20). With Soft Start, this 1V reference is held at 0.2V at power-up and once the sense voltage exceeds this, a current is injected into the Soft Start Capacitor. The reference voltage then begins to follow the Soft Start voltage to provide a ramping reference and therefore a ramping current sense limit as shown. The reference then holds itself at 1V and the Soft Start cycle is complete.
