58G-Capable Devices

To help drive the next wave of Ethernet deployment, the Virtex® UltraScale+™ 58G devices integrate up to 48 transceivers running up to 58 Gb/s PAM4 for multi-terabit systems. These devices are optics, cable, and backplane capable, and integrate the necessary IP. PAM4 (four-level pulse amplitude modulation) doubles transmission at the same operating frequency when compared to NRZ (non-return-to-zero). NRZ reaches a serial rate limit at around 25 G, driven by the ecosystem of materials, connectors, and backplanes. PAM4 allows for the technology trend of increasing transceiver rate while reusing the existing equipment and backplanes.
