Power is a necessary requirement for system designs, but is rarely the main focus. Because systems are getting smaller while adding more technology and power requirements into their designs, new thermal and space management issues are being created. In industrial systems, there is also the added challenge of being able to handle large, unpredictable input voltage transients due to long power cables and poor quality power supplies while protecting the main system components. Furthermore, design cycles are also shrinking, driving the need for complete solutions that can solve these challenges. This is pushing many designers to power modules as a way to resolve these issues.
