For fifteen years, polymer capacitors expanded into every segment of the electronics industry with the exception of most automotive applications. The primary barriers to entry were associated with qualifying polymer capacitors to the AEC-Q200 stress test qualification plan. Standard polymer designs are typically rated at 105°C and will pass a 60°C, 90% relative humidity test condition. These standard series struggle to meet the 125°C life test requirement or the 85°C, 85% relative humidity test with regard to a full 1000 hours of testing. A few vendors offer modified processes to deliver a series of polymer capacitors with improvement humidity and temperature performance capabilities, however they can not meet the complete set of requirements in order to be declared truly automotive grade. KEMET’s T598 Series represents the first polymer product lines that can pass 100% of the requirements of the AEC-Q200 qualification test.
