When evaluating application load requirements and contact current, it is recommended that the load type be taken into consideration. When switching a resistive load with either an AC voltage or a DC voltage, the amount of inrush current is fairly short in duration and stable. When switching an inductive load, a good rule of thumb is that the added inrush current will be two times greater than that of a resistive input. When switching even higher inrush loads such as lamp or motor loads, an inrush current of up to fives times the normal running current of the device is needed. Voltage surges from inductive loads can be controlled through the use of surge absorption components, such as diodes or varistors.
