Successful designers pay careful attention to the placement of the antenna on the circuit board.  This diagram illustrates possible options of recommended placement for a single chip antenna. The optimal layout for a chip antenna is along the border of the PCB where no more than 3 sides of a no-ground plane (shown yellow) are covered by the ground plane (shown orange).  Based on these criteria, layouts #1, #2, #3, and #4 are recommended.  Layout #5 is not recommended because all 4 sides of the antenna no-ground plane are surrounded by the ground plane.
