In the field of plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles the technology uses powerful electric motors for the propulsion source. This requires large battery packs made up of hundreds of cells installed in the vehicle. The batteries, having a finite energy capacity, must be recharged on a periodic basis. Therefore the cycling of charging and discharging of the cells is typically done by connecting to a power grid.
