For all DC-DC and AC-DC power filtering, low ESR tantalum chip capacitors, in the 100uF / 10v range will handle the majority of Smart Meter applications. Depending on ripple, TPM multi-anode tantalum for ultra-low ESR is ideal, while Hi CV MLCC can be used for the input side.  Digital / Analog conversion in both directions is relying on new generation DSPs which can handle faster data rates.
