RJ45 Jacks with Magnetics

RJ45 jacks with integrated magnetics from Phoenix Contact extend the existing RJ45 portfolio for industrial applications up to 1 Gbps. Wired Ethernet requires magnetics as detailed in the Ethernet specification for 10/100/1000BASE-T networks. The magnetics provide needed functionality, including electrical isolation, filtering against EMI, signal conditioning, and matching impedance, that ensures proper data transmission between devices.

When manufacturing a device with Ethernet communication capability, a designer can choose to incorporate the magnetics directly onto their PCB, between the PHY and the RJ45 jack. The alternative to that design work is to use RJ45 jacks that already have the magnetics incorporated. The concept is simple. The components that make up the magnetics (transformers and a common-mode choke, along with resistors and capacitors) are simply included in common configurations within the RJ45 housing.

RJ45 jacks with magnetics and integrated connector modules (ICM) simplify PCB design/layout, lower component SKUs, are easier to assemble, and take up less PCB space when compared to discrete, separate magnetics designs.
