Connecting the Edge for a Sustainable Future
Inspired by issues and needs defined by organizations like GEF Small Grants Programme, implemented by UNDP, Intel, Microsoft and Analog Devices have joined Terasic to launch a design contest that will bring the world’s most innovative minds together to demonstrate how intelligent use of FPGAs in edge and cloud computation can reduce demands on the planet’s resources. The InnovateFPGA Design Contest seeks to inspire and create sustainable solutions that reduce environmental impact.
Connecting an FPGA-based embedded device to the cloud is a real game changer. The FPGA Cloud Connectivity Kit, an Azure certified device, makes it easy with reference designs and articles to develop intelligent, highly scalable IoT products that can collect, analyze and react to data without much complexity. Analog Devices has enabled the Cloud Connectivity kit to ingest and aggregate data from an almost limitless number of sensors. Contestants will make use of the Terasic FPGA Cloud Connectivity Kit, with Analog Devices plug-in cards, connected to Azure IoT Cloud Services. The kits will be provided to selected participating teams at no cost, along with a small quantity of ADI plug-in cards, and credits/limited time access to Microsoft’s Azure Cloud Services. Teams will need to demo their designs at the regional finals and the Grand Final.
Terasic's FPGA Cloud Connectivity kit , based on Intel Edge-Centric FPGAs, makes it easy to develop versatile applications that can collect, analyze, and react to data from cloud-connected IoT devices. The kit is based on the popular DE10-nano, which is an Azure IoT certified edge device.
The DE10-Nano, is a flexible hardware design platform, designed for makers, educators, and IoT system developers. Intel SoC FPGAs combine the familiarity of an Arm® processor with the flexibility of programmable logic and Intel’s reference designs and tutorials make getting started easy. The board includes two 40-pin general purpose expansion headers and an Arduino® (Uno R3) header to support a wide range of sensors, controllers, and displays. All the tools, software, and examples you need to begin your design is either in the box, or free for download. The DE10-Nano development board is equipped with high-speed DDR3 memory, analog-to-digital capabilities, Ethernet networking, and much more that promises many applications.
Analog Devices has an extensive portfolio of Evaluation Boards and Reference Designs to help solve developers’ system level application challenges with mixed signal designs, and software drivers. Use the Arduino compatible and LTC 2x7 header on the DE10-Nano to plug-in a variety of precision signal chain solutions from Analog Devices.

FPGA Cloud Connectivity Kit
Terasic's Intel kit makes it easy to develop versatile FPGA-based applications that can collect, analyze, and react to data from cloud-connected IoT devices. Combining the Intel Cyclone® V SoC-based DE10-nano with the RFS sensor and connectivity daughtercard forms an Azure IoT certified edge device. The IoT device is certified by cloud service providers such as Microsoft Azure, and is certified to run with Microsoft Azure.
Real-World Plug-Ins for the Terasic DE10-Nano Kit
The Terasic DE10-Nano is a development kit based on an Intel SoC which combines the power of a Cyclone FPGA with a dual-core ARM® Cortex®-A9 processor. ADI offers many development boards that extend the functionality of the kit. Whether the user wants to measure real-world phenomena such as toxic gases, or dynamically adjust a power supply voltage, there likely is a solution to get them started. The DE10-Nano board itself is also a great example of how ADI ICs are critical to making an embedded system work.
